Actually, they pretty much did just that in the classic era. Back then if you wanted to box you needed two separate accounts (at $10 or whatever it was a month) plus two computers sitting next to each other, along with an internet connection with enough bandwidth to support them both (remember, this was back when dial-up was the most common form of internet access). Very few people had a setup like that back in '99.
What a lot of people did have (and what they think of when they remember boxing back then) was a program called EQW, which allowed you to run two EQ instances from a single computer. But that program was banned, which meant that boxing was banned for everyone who didn't have two computers (and two accounts, and a high-speed connection).

Lol we had that setup - the other PC was total garbage and we had a cleric F9'ed to topview it was so lagged out.
