I am doing something similar (without the role play element) with some of my RL friends. Some of us have other characters at different levels and some have just this one character but whenever we are all playing we get 'The Group' going and go on adventure for loot and xp!
Something you might want to consider is the XP penalty some races/classes get as this will impact on your leveling together. As an example, in our group I am playing as an Ogre SK and I have to play more hours just to try and stay up with the cleric.
As the grouping level expands you will inevitably become more relaxed about ensuring everyone is the same level because there will be times people slack off and the rest of you want to play.
If you manage to get it going then I am sure you will have a great time as the best thing with doing this is you can go to places that you wouldn't normally if you were having to look for a pick up group.

Hey, thanks!
I'll definitely think about the exp penalties as well. We'll have to work something out for that... Maybe the characters with the exp penalties can have "side quest" nights where they party up together for a few hours away from the rest of the group. Just an idea; we'll work it out.
