Um... sword & sorcery doesn't just mean European. And even the Euro genre arguably has Friar Tuck and/or Little John. [insert argument for ogre monks here]

D&D had monks going back to 1975, based on the Destroyer/Remo Williams novels, but they were pretty weak. Still, they've been a staple of the gaming genre since then.
