For a new EQ player what would be a good class to start with?

It really just depends on what you want to be doing. There are classes that are better for making easy money (druid, necro, etc.) but if you don't enjoy their playstyle, you may end up having a bad time.

The wiki entry above has a pretty good breakdown of what the classes have to offer, as well as some suggestions on how to pick your class. Ultimately, despite some classes being more gear-dependent than others, you can start out as any class. Even without the amount of help from high-level characters you can (and most likely will) receive on the server, you can group your way through content wearing a loin cloth and a torch as long as you play your role well.
Also note: the mantra from the masses seems to be "always be leveling." In other words, ignore gearing & money-making and just grind up as fast as possible - the money will come later. While this is certainly the most efficient route, it's not for everyone. Everquest is great for playing how you want to play. If you feel like you're struggling to keep up with your teammates and want to improve your character's abilities (or you're just bored of the grind), use the wiki to find a low-level cash camp, a doable low-level quest, or even a mob in your level range with a drop you can use. Playing a tank, for example, you can easily farm up enough money to buy a suit of banded armor even at level 5 or 6 just by selling spiderling silk & high quality bear pelts to players.
P.S. Welcome, good luck, and have fun
