Druid is great to start with. They are not at all gear dependent so you don't have to spend much $ on them and you can save your cash for spells. They can solo. Later on (29+) you can port other people and make money doing so. Travel is made easy by sow, invis, levi, and self ports.
I think any class that can solo is a good class to start with. Druid/Mage/Necro/ench/sham. And none of them will break your bank with gear reqs.

I think there's 2 types of EQ players the sitters/spectators and the people who love to be right in the action. If you like to sit while grouped you've cut the field down by half etc
