Druid downtime can be almost nonexistent if you follow the charm kiting spots. It's definitely pretty bad when quadding or root rotting, though.
Necro has a bad rep around here b/c there are so many bad necros (nothing wrong with that, it's very easy to play at a fear kiting level), but a well played necro is highly useful in groups. I have several necros on my friends list that I will always invite to groups for a DPS spot. They have potential to beat chanters for top DPS from a single character when charming undead b/c they still have nice DPS from lifetaps/dots on top of the charmed pet. Even the summoned 54 pet can give monks a run on DPS if the tank is positioning for backstabs from pet. If you like the class; play it, learn it, get good at it, and you won't be hated. It's also one of the best duo partners a Rogue can ask for, so maybe I'm a little biased...
Bard/Sham are really the only great soloers that can choose to swing a weapon on a regular basis. Bard would only be meleeing while in groups, and sham mostly only at low levels and summoning mobs higher up.
Others have already covered chanter.

Totally agree with the thoughts above.
Just to add to the necro comment, the reason people aren't fans of necro's seem to be is that they are always hell bend on getting a mob to enchant, even bitch about it, and when they get a pet, it only attacks 1/2 the time and the necro never stands up to nuke with lifetaps, which do decent dmg an overall fairly cheap on the mana cost.
