Oasis was occasionally referred to with the odd derogatory remark simply because it was on the EC-NRo-Oasis-HHK levelling path; therefore, there were quite a few players who made little attempt to learn to play their characters and wanted to hit the highest level with minimal effort.
That said, I enjoyed Oasis with my Chanter back in the day. Good, steady action with either Crocodile / Caiman hunting around the docks, grabbing a spot in an Orc Highway group, or PUG / Static action choosing a pulling spot and hunting roaming mobs e.g. Caimans, Desert Madmen, occasional undead inc. those evil emaciated bastards AKA Dry Bones Skeletons.
Oasis can be flat out fun, and isn't too difficult to grab a spot in a group.
The issues with Oasis are:
1. Can be too popular
2. Higher percentage of joining a dysfunctional group
3. Doesn't teach higher play grouping mechanics
4. Sand Giants
5. Spectre Trains
If you do plan to spend time in Oasis, keep your eyes open and pay attention. When things go South, all of the action - due to pathing and player pulls - tends to focus on the area around the Docks, which is often littered with PC corpses. Whilst running [invis] to Innothule, it warmed my heart to see that this tradition is still adhered on Project 1999.
