Pretty rare but if the HDD was shorting it could've bridged and cause the GPU to overheat and go bye bye.
US it under warranty? Just don't tell you you plugged anything in and they will not be able to to tell.
I don't like your chances of fixing it without opening it up...
It would be running off the the motherboard graphics.
