The point of a persistent world MMO is that it's—duh—persistent. If the design requires scheduled "wipes" to prevent stagnation then it's already failed at a mechanical level, or at least in influencing the perceptions of its players.

Even in fantasy, there's a line between acceptable and absurd; you'd have had to trip over it and hit your head to think that a 2-foot tall pistol-wielding rodent is anything but the latter.
