As a 60 epic troll Shadowknight, I maxed out my INT and never looked back. Just wearing a decent set of gear, plus shaman buffs, was always enough to cap STR and get 200+ STA. I never felt the returns on 40-50 STA (which is something like 130-150 HP at 60) would outweigh the extra mana leveling from 1-60. Granted, I did solo a lot so I did what I needed to do to make things easier on myself.
I can, however, safely say that in any situation where I would have died, an extra 150 hp would not have saved me but the extra mana gave me more leeway for one last FD.
