Necro pets (from what I understand, I'm no authority) really don't take a hit well after the early levels. I can't say anything about how well the pet damages at that point, but I do know that Necro's start to prefer charming.
In the end, the pet is a free dot and emergency tool (reclaim energy, agro sacrifice, etc).
