Lists are a very real thing, but whether or not group leads keep one for themselves is a completely different story...
I lead a lot of groups when I'm exping and do actually keep a list on my desk. It's a sticky note wherein I just write the names, classes, and levels of people who've been PMing me for an invite. Problem is, usually by the time a spot opens 3/4 of the people on that list are either offline or afk.
Lists are more of a courtesy thing if anything. Don't ask a group to put you on the list and then expect them to uphold it for more than 30 minutes. Chances are they're not even keeping a real list and they've already forgotten your name anyway.
If a group needs a replacement healer, the next melee on the list is not going to get that spot even if he's been there for several hours. That's just common sense.
