If others don't know, in modern EQ you can just target someone and see the buffs on them (and the timers). It's kind of like being able to read someone's intentions so you don't need to ask them as much what they're doing. That would help to prevent terrorist attacks. Anyway, I think the worn off messages are nice as you don't have to ask whether they need refreshes or not. It still takes some concentration and you might need audio triggers.
But the ... modern game is a lot more convoluted and lots more windows and hotkeys. Personally, I like how simplistic project1999 is. There's not near as much baggage. Also.. if you think the eq client is complicated, you should have a look at some of the clients for muds (text-based mmorpgs). That is convoluted.
One way to keep track of refreshes is to cast teh buffs on yourself before casting them on others. But this costs extra mana. It's handy though if you can afford it.
