I thought it worked (better, at least) at one time, as well. Shortly after I joined, I noticed how it would count time sitting at the Character Select screen as played time. It was only within the last year or so that I noticed it was even stranger. I noticed it would often advance my played time over 2 days in a 24 hour period.
