RIP grandpa, died a couple years ago, was 98, saw the depression, saw the nazi's in the trenches, nazi sub sank his ship, was lost at sea for 4 weeks.
before he died, he was out working in the garden, cutting a branch off a tree, bout 9inches in diameter, he cut it and it snapped giving way pinning his index finger against the tree, effectively smashing it off, dangling by one piece of skin.
I remember him being calm, cool, collected, and more pissed that he would have to go to the hospital than anything. we get to the hospital and he asks me to get him a paper, he proceeds to read the news paper with his finger dangling off.
i ask him, how can you be so calm, he looks me dead in the eye and says boy you dont know shit, you are god damned lucky too. I knew he was refering to being in ww2.
