I don't know how my /played was almost 14 days when I only played from march to july 1999 and was only level 13 (close to 14). I never left my computer unattended when going to bed back then so i am unsure how I accumulated that much. Even now with all of my afk time (even falling asleep and leaving it) I get to level 14 and past in maybe 2-3 days /played. Back then I didn't know about a lot of the quests or popular places. I just played to see all of hte different sights and sounds. I can understand that much, but it's still hard for me to grasp how I had that much /played at almost level 14.
My belief is that people leveled up a lot slower back then because it was new. Also... if you play this game solo a lot and you're not a mage or druid or necro you'll have a large /played and a lot of frustration, but it's a challenge too and some people will do it because they don't know better. Even now I have larger than normal /played on non-solo characters I solo too much (when I shouldn't). I prefer soloing though because I'm not tied to a group and do not have to stick around when I want to go afk or do something else.
I know that at the lower levels there're a lot of unused camps because people go to the popular places. There's room for two to four times more population in the lower level zones i'm sure. I have no idea about hte high levels, but it's pretty common for games to release with not enough high level content, especially for hardcores.
I rmemeber clearly seeing 2000+ on servers during live.
