I have never used alliance. The wiki said it was bugged (randomly lowering faction as often as it raises it) and so I never used it. On the other hand, I have never needed it. I did 90% of the Exotic Drinks quest (Stein of Moggok) at level 4 using nothing but illusions and invisibility. I even got myself a Ring of Rodcet Nife (which requires amiable faction with the paladins) not long after arriving in Qeynos.
