It's not absurd to compare the two, either.

Video game guilds operate just like Ancient Rome.
No, no they do not. The politics favor ancient Greek politics, slander and defamation without murdering. The recruitment favors a pirate ship in the 18th century, try to recruit everyone and kill those who refuse.
The daily operation of a guild favors an understaffed daycare. On any given day someone will cry and whine, someone will throw a tantrum, a fight might occur and cliques form automatically. The easiest way to solve the problem is usually appeasement with a piece of candy/loot.

If you have good leadership, they spend a lot of time playing babysitters and you might never even see what happens. Remember to tell those people thanks because they deserve it.
If the leadership is not so good, you will probably get to see stupid shit daily while helping to gear out officers instead of the guild. Guildies choose sides, grudges and rifts are born, etc., and the guild dies slowly then collapses.

Most people just want to be an officer or leader for the authority and prestige instead of actually wanting to put in the effort to make the guild better. A hardworking and charitable leader is rare so show them they are appreciated.
