When you first log on you should familiarize yourself with your starting city. There are no magical lines to appear to show you were stuff is. You'll need to hand your note to your class guildmaster to get a shirt.
If you have spells, open up your spellbook and memorize them. After that go to the area right outside the guards and start killing animals. You can get your first few levels within a safe distance of the guards. If you get overwhelmed you can always run back to them.
You'll be too poor to do much tradeskilling at first. Kill animals, loot them, sell the stuff to merchants. You'll discover some things are worth a whole lot more than others. Get money, but some basic cloth/leather armor, and buy backpacks.
There aren't thousands of quests to mask the XP grind. There are some very fun quests, but there is no system where you can run around and get like 10 quests and then go complete them. This game is fun because you have to work with others to accomplish things
