Not really Red99 has and always will be, at least until Velious mostly a numbers game.
It's all about the assist dispell train. As long as you have a good group or two of geared players which you did, once the dispell hits even BIS players are dying in 5-10 seconds. 1800-2300 hp's unbuffed etc.
That being said you need to deal with a bunch of loot drama, hand holding, and raid leading and other issues that come with leading a guild like that, so I hardly think we're doing it wrong - it will come down to burn out / consistency / geared people who usually lose interest etc.
