Neither, GM's searched logs for me. I was hoping that the person would come forward and just give me the item back so it could be forgotten. I'm just saying you should've contacted people who you knew (which you did), then if they all respond that they didn't take it, then you reach out to GMs (which it sounds like you did).
Making this post seems unnecessary since it didn't help and just foster the "name and shame" posts.
