I find that "combo" headsets usually have inferior mic+sound, and are of lower built quality. I don't bother buying them anymore. I got a blue snowball mic, and jvc harx900 headphones. One of the best headphones you can get for cheap, their price has creeped up a bit over time as more people realize how good they are. Their drivers (the part that vibrates to make sound) are produced by the same factory that stamps them out for some fancy $300 headphones by another company. But you can pick up the harx900 for only $65.
As for the mic, you could also get a cheap USB mic.. But it will probably fail in a year or two. Blue snowball costs just about as much as the headphones above, but records very well and should last many years.
