There is no way to sustain pvp with fair numbers. There is no way to even have real pvp without pve to fight over. In what situation are you going to get both sides to gather and fight in a random zone for no reason? This will never happen. You just said you aren't interested in 2 year old content so there is 0 chance you will be involved in any guild vs guild fights. With that mentality you will either farm loot or gank people farming loot and that is about it.
If you want good guild vs guild fights you need two guilds that care about controlling content period. If there are at least 2 guilds that care about this then your guild can jump in and fuck around and do whatever they want to do. The other two guilds will set the stage and present this opportunity for you.
As for zergs, a necessary evil because neither side wants to lay down and lose when all it takes is a /guild invite to compete.

I log in and pvped in KC last time I was online for a couple hours. I had fun until 13 azrael showed up for 5 of us.
You should be directing this critique towards azrael. They are the one that claimed a dawn of smaller guilds fighting over mobs.
