I just hope that the true subscription model isn't extinct. I understand that the free to play model provides some instant return [microtransactions] on development costs for investors, but they need to realize that original mmorpg players are not 15 years old now. They are, by and large, 30-50 and have enough income to pay for a decent game. Thinking about it, I would pay upwards of $40/month for an evolving game I could look forward to playing every day.
Wow costed > $60 million to create and profited $8 billion (most of it from subscriptions).

With the subscription you achieve what is known as Patron status. There are things exclusive to being a patron that don't make it so you can ONLY play the game this way, but it is incentive, for sure. One being, access to the Auction House, as well +labor regeneration. I know there are many more perks than that, but that's what is what I know of at this point. Latter parts of the game require that labor generation almost, so it definitely helps.
