Fascinates me as well. Most of these players have no sense of allegiance towards their city. They go where the money and trophies are.
You hit on some good points but I will tell you one thing. In general, wildly successful people do not follow sports. It's a ritual most prevalent in lower/middle income areas. I have a friend who participates in 10 fantasy leagues, knows who ran a 4.4 40 at the last combine and could tell you without batting an eyelash every team that won their conference finals in the past 20 years. Same guy complains about how hard it is to get a job in today's economy.
Losers gravitate towards sports. I understand that is a generalization but as Adam Carolla says, they are called that for a reason.

I'm about two sick days away from living in a box, drooling on the streets while yelling "WTS body for rations, pst" at pedestrians. My life is a mediocre drama of failed tries, missed opportunities, and destitution, and I haven't followed sports since high school when I had to start paying my own damn cable bill. (12 years ago).
Moral? You don't need sports to suck at life.
Even my eq skills are sub par.
