phobias are generally not an intentional point of view, and considering todays popular stance on gender-roles and sexuality, i would expect folks to have a little more sympathy for those suffering from such a disorder.

Except actual phobias dredge up anxiety/stress and not
disgust as homophobia does. Have yet to meet anyone who was so terrified of "the gay" that they actually had an anxiety attack and fainted at the sight of two lesbians necking. Homophobic people aren't suffering, they're only making others around them have to suffer for their own ignorance.
