It's a stunt, for the most part.
Also, if the US dollar nosedives then so do most economies in the world, especially China seeing as they are essentially America's largest creditor now. Last time I checked China was also more involved with keeping its currency artificially low to boost exports rather than championing it as a USD alternative.
