The only reason Soccer is so globally popular is because even the dirt poor can afford to play it and the majority of the world's population is dirt poor.

Pretty much, same reason why basketball is so popular in the inner cities in America, all you need is a ball and a $300 pair of shoes and you can play at any public court.
