Production is driven by demand. The populous at large doesn't give a shit about the rainforest and so they purchase goods from places that tear down rainforest.
As strange as it may sound, business and free trade is the solution to this problem. The problem with the rainforest (and indeed the proverbial 'problem of the commons' that people use to try to discredit free enterprise as a solution to applied force) is that no one with any sway owns them. If Taco Bell owned these rainforest lands, they'd be less likely to slash and burn for places for cows to shit...they would invest in their interests, similar to what is done in the US (See: sustainable logging operations and why they don't go fucknuts logging shit D=).
We laugh at the savage who cuts down the tree to get to the fruit, but yet, we do it on a larger scale every day ^_^
