You most certainly do not recall seeing a lot of racist and homophobic names in 1999, now I know you're full of shit. Guides and GM's actually CARED about enforcing naming policy when the game came out to such a degree that even humorous takes on phrases and real life references were censored. Perhaps I do have a romanticized view of how things were, or perhaps Fennin Ro wasn't nearly as bad as the servers you played on. But as a whole, people were far more friendly to each other.
I'd accredit it to roleplaying still being a heavy component of the game as well as a general lack of knowledge of mechanics, which led to a greater feeling of camaraderie because everything was mysterious and dangerous.
