Is it really that impressive? THey've had how long to learn them? Probably memorized.
I was the raid leader in the guild heartbrand refers to. Until about 2012-13, Vent wasn't mandatory. We had Vent during that time but it was mostly used for bullshitting. The raids were also ridiculously more complex than classic EQ. However, one of the big reasons I got away with not using vent or even going over what we were doing in each event is because I wrote up how each event went that could be read in about 2-3 min so people knew WTF was up.

So we would just point apps and tards to our guild's wiki site, and they would know what was going on for the raid and then any raid directions that had to happen on the fly would be typed out by myself or were hotkeys. I probably had 40-50 raid hotkeys of things that I would have to regularly say, and didn't feel like typing. "Blow up red mushrooms!" For example.

Almost all of the raid wiki guides from UF, HoT and VoA were written by myself or another Druid officer at the time. This guide was good fun to write (although I got a bit too verbose with it). That raid was so very awesome. Even with all it's bugs. Atleast until you beat it a few times, then the 2 hour scripted event could die in a fire.

Voice chat I enjoy for Just talking/bullshitting. But for raids, I definitely prefer text. EQ lend itself to that pretty well too. Early on we only had guild chat / shout / OOC / auction to filter chat into. And raids were simple then. Raids got more complex, raid window is added as well as raid chat. Also chat channels come into being.

Everything, even in modern EQ, can be done easily without voice chat. Would be fun if All Vent and TS servers went down and we got a server repop. Just to see how confused people get.
