When you clip your nails don't round off the sides. It feels a bit counter-intuitive but cut your nails straight across. I get them from time to time and doing that has pretty much prevented them entirely.

I had 3 bad ones that had to be surgically fixed when I was ~14, ever since then I've cut my toenails off straight across, never had issues since. To get them to heal up (unless they're really bad and you need medical attention), pack some cotton under them (peel off some from a q-tip etc) and prop them up so the corners dont dig under your skin, change it out at least 2x a day if you got some oozing going on.... let them grow out.
Again, the key is to *never* cut the corners/round the corners - just cut the nail off straight across and leave it a little long when you do cut it.
