Basements are awesome and normally cheap square footage for a house but it is very expensive in Dallas with the foundation issues. Usually a floating foundation is used. If you want to deal with huge foundation renovations it is possible but cost wise it is just more efficient to build a bigger house above ground. I guess if $$ is no object and you want something like a wine cellar you can make it happen but even then it is a hassle to deal with foundation problems in addition to the money it cost.
Go to google maps and type in 4057 grassmere lane, Dallas tx and look at this property from satellite view.

They are building this sick mansion near where I live with a huge parking garage in it. Seems to be the new thing to do. Granted people in this area have stupid money so they can do this kind of stuff.
