I find this highly insulting to people. Unless you were asshole deep on article 15s, or have 4 kids you have to pay support to you are telling half a story for sympathy.
We can have two different stories here. One you lived on base, no rent, power, trash, water bills. I took an average of the 4 years you were in between E1-E4. At that rate your pay would have been $ 22,500 in normal pay and an additional 2,900 in substance allowance for a total $25,400 a year with no expenses at all.
Or you lived off base and made 12,360 a year in BAH, 2800 in food, and 22,500 in normal pay. Combined for 37,660.
I won't even ask if you were deployed the four years you were in, because then your pay would go up even more. The way you talk, sounds like you sat at a desk on a post in the middle of Washington the entire time.
25,400 a year at least for just showing up everyday and no expenses outside of buying a over priced car is pretty pimp change. Hell you would get all the taxes back. Unless you had a balling 20-30k sign up bonus you don't mention.
I fucking hate military people who cry about poverty because they mismanage money, or just want free handouts. I bet you go to every store asking for a vet discount.
Other than that, try a red wig.

Harsh criticism and your numbers are more accurate, but srsly, I did a thankless job for thankless people, for way less then what most privilaged middle classed kids got out of their 2 your IT courses.
Was E4, and no housing allowance, and none of that extra 2900, I ate at the cafeteria every damn day.
Also, that was from 2002-2006, I started out at 13,000 or so in basic or 16,000 if you count whatever bullshit they didn't take from you to pay for your first set of BDU's and sneakers.
