Not sure if this is how it was done but some posts suggest taunt+(or)proximity worked. Also on this post "AoW is pretty much 100% proximity agro, while idol is not." It looks like in 2003 it was possible to tank it with a single tank. This is 2003 so AE taunt was around I guess. Like I said, threat was not an issue even in the beginning.

I was playing a cleric so I didn't have the exact details on the warrior side but I don't remember anyone ever having to ask if the warrior clicky agro item was charged for any of the Velious encounters. |
When I was tanking it (being the MT on Rallos Zek for Ascending Dawn at the time) it was impossible to 1 man tank AoW. Even with end game Velious gear. We had a 3 tank rotation when AoW was first killed on Rallos Zek. Artaenc is correct when AoW is 100% proximity agro and Idol is not.
