You have to do something or you are just as responsible. The only way abstaining would help is if everyone else were on board. It is a voluntary system that people have been conditioned to rely on.

Dismantling the parties is a start but the parties exist because of an obvious polarization in political thought. All that will be left is a power vaccuum and rinse and repeat. The elite know this which is why they coopt movements like the tea party and occupy (/eye roll) so they can manage opposition.
bolded/underlined text for emphasis of these 200 year old ideas that need to be eradicated from the minds of American people.

If we all came together under the reality that times change, and with that people and minds have to change, then maybe something positive could come from it. Until people are ready to let go of these old school ways of looking at government/politics nothing will change for the better.

I mean of the people eligible for voting in the US, less than half took part in any of the last 4 presidential elections. Take that half and split it down the middle (more or less) and you've got the results of nearly all 4 of the past elections. Each major party candidate has roughly gotten 25%~ of the total number of voters who are eligible. That leaves about half of the nation's eligible voters not taking place in the elections at all.

To me, this suggests that half of the country's voters are either A. not represented by either candidate or their party, or B. they just don't care/know enough about either candidate to feel compelled to vote. In any case, whoever wins an election can't say that they did so with the approval of over 25% of eligible American voters. That is a serious issue which needs correcting immediately before any American president can be taken seriously.

I'm no political expert but it doesn't really take a genius to see that this system is failing for numerous reasons, and its happening quicker with every passing year.
