I always advise Ranger as starting learning class. You get to learn both, melee and casting later on. Its not a terribly powerful class, but its cool in its own way

I recommend Wood Elf for a race.
I would avoid evil races/classes for starters cause it will heavily impede your ability to travel to other cities until you more familiar with the game.
Alternatively, Barbarian Shaman is a nice starting option imho.
