I would find that if you spend 99.9% of the relationship online, or over the phone, which only servers ONE purpose. Making you feel like you aren't as lonely as you really are because you fail to go out and find real life interaction.
I'd call it E-Dating. If you wanna call it something else because it makes you feel warmer inside, then by all means do it. Because it appears your "boyfriend" won't be making you warm at ALL from accross the country
