It can remove feelings of fear or inadequacy allowing you to give yourself an honest self reflection. The ego often gets in the way of self improvement. But of course. That's part of why I've taken such an extended break from it. It's nice for some internal searching now and then beyond what I can do in a normal state of mind. It's nice to have a different perspective on things every once in a while.
