Then there's the whole biblical aspect of aliens entangled with the human race...
"We made them in OUR image..." - did they mean from their DNA? Remember simplistic translations for words because of no understanding of genetics, physics, etc at the time won't translate well even today. It would explain quite a bit actually, such as the missing link.
