EXP penalties make a much bigger difference when you're soloing since when you group, they're spread throughout the group, so a 68% exp penalty for a troll shadowknight, in a full group, would only be a 12% penalty per person. Unless they have solved the issue of spreading penalties to the group, your penalty is yours alone.
Again, correct me if I am wrong...but, this was not fixed last I checked.
