EXP penalties make a much bigger difference when you're soloing since when you group, they're spread throughout the group, so a 68% exp penalty for a troll shadowknight, in a full group, would only be a 12% penalty per person. (Of course, you have to think about what penalties and bonuses the rest of your groupmates have, as well.) So if you're looking to solo a lot, maybe a shadowknight isn't the best idea
