The most ridiculous part of your statement is that "Most people felt that human slavery was indeed acceptable". That was the people on top, the slavers. For example If a majority of Haitians thought that slavery was indeed acceptable in the 1790s then they wouldnt have led the first successful slave revolt culminating in the independence of a country.
The native americans who drowned themselves at sea when given the choice of being slaves or dying didnt "indeed think that slavery was acceptable".
