It would be nice to be on a server where nobody can be PL'd ahead of you. That being said some players don't have jobs and multibox so it will never truly be an even playing field.
Not exactly sure how mercenaries work but if they are in the game along with multiboxing well than shit can get pretty damn silly during that race to whatever the level cap is these days.
Is there even a max to how many AA's you can acquire any more? Or do they basically want you to exp grind forever?

Well I quit live before DPS mercenaries were implemented, but assuming that they function similarly to the healing and tank mercs, heres the run down.
Everyone can hire a mercenary, and while your mercenary is up, it costs a certain amount of platinum every 30 minutes (As you work on your Seeds of Destruction progression, you can get stronger mercenaries) They follow you around similar to how a pet would, except the healers are clerics, and you can set how active you want them to be, there are efficient modes, passive, etc.
The tank mercs have aggressive, assist, etc...The AI is pretty damn impressive, I never really had any hitches. If you aggro too many mobs higher than you the merc will "flee" leaving you stuck alone. The tank mercs are known to be able to carry any character to 50 in essentially no time at all.
If you box with different mercenaries, you can go AFK and your mercs will kill any mobs that spawn in the area with ease. This is a bannable offense, but I witnessed it quite a bit.
The mercs are nice for people who dont have time to set up a group, or those times when you just cant find that last class. (Mercs take up a group slot, and they do count into the exp split)
Personally I think they shouldn't have them on this new server, since leveling is so easy already until 65+
