There's honest criticism and then there's useful, productive, and showing-the-proper-respect-for-someone-who-is-doing-you-a-giant-favor criticism (that giant favor being the hundreds if not thousands of hours that have been put in to give you a free game). You could have said:

That would have conveyed the same honest criticism, but it would have done so in a polite manner. As my wife frequently has to remind me "it's not just what you say, it's how you say it".
