There are two basic kinds of players. One group wants to do its own thing and not fuss much over what other folks do. The other group follows the mantra of, "For me to win, others must lose." These two groups typically don't coexist happily in a single game.
A game like Ultima Online tended to harbor the latter group but not the former. Something like Warcraft appeals more to the former. EQ is a bit strange because it draws in both types to some degree, which fuels much of the arguing and drama EQ is known for.
