This was handled poorly.
People are using metaphors because it is absolutely absurd how you are perma-banning ADDITIONAL characters for helping to transfer or move items off of characters that were once banned.
Instead of permanently banning people, why not just fix the error that was made by staff (it's not like the players hacked and got their characters back) and ban the people that should have remained banned? Everyone knows that you can trace activity and follow where items go. Why would anyone risk getting items back if they thought they were doing something malicious? People were probably eager to use items that have been held up for a long time on a banned character. You have also previously unbanned people because of an upcoming expansion. We have an upcoming expansion and this could have easily been the case.
Post on forums saying people were unbanned on accident, warn people that if they received items from a previously banned character, they should post on the forums to determine the best way to return the items (or delete), and move on.
Banning more people because of a mistake in the code seems completely crazy and heavy handed. I am pretty disappointed in the staff. It's almost like you sat in a room and thought about how you could further ban people that enjoy playing the game and keep logging into to a emulator with 100 people. Keep it up and you will lose even more people.
