Actually my favorite Civ strat is as follows:
* Choose Stalin for industrialism
* Build cities on a isolated island far away from the mainland
*Collect capital by the thousands
Since it'll be ages before I ever meet another civilization much less for them to build up a huge fleet to become a threat to my civilization I can build up on research and culture/economics
With that being done I can progress 10x faster through the ages and pool up all those resources so I can be well into the industrial age while they're still messing around the middle ages.
So I go about building all these wonders and getting all this technology and the first sign of foreign intrusion by sea I pool a good chunk of my capital into blockades and build mechanized units like tanks on my main city.
When they finally do get pissed at me and try to run rampant on my civilization with musketmen and galleys I'm all ballin' on their ass with infantry and tanks while continuing to crush them culturally and economically.
Basically I call it the "One man is his own island" approach to victory <3
