Why do you feel the need to guard any raid mob that you arent in the process of killing at that moment?

The point is to prevent opposing guilds from killing it and obtaining its loot.
I'm beginning to understand the mentality of people who play on a red server, yet feel sad/indignant/simply baffled that the dominant guild doesn't throw them any bones: They think of PvE and PvP as entirely separate concerns.
The fact is they're inseparably coupled in EQ for two reasons.
- The rewards from PvE strongly affect a player's success in PvP.
- Conflict is meaningless unless it's over something. Historically, that something has almost always been resources of some kind or another. Here there's only one resource: monster loot.
If you're not fighting over monster loot, what's the sense in fighting at all? For the "fun" of it? The outcome of combat in this game is usually predetermined by circumstances prior to the fight and rarely is it possible to make a comeback. Those aren't mechanics that make for a particularly fun PvP experience in and of itself, which means people who profess to play EQ for the PvP are either lying or just fools who don't realize they'd be better off in a game with more symmetrical combat.

there is no pvp when you guys show up with triple the numbers of your opposition

You're retarded if you think that Nihilum can field 3x the opposition's numbers at a single encounter and still have the reserves needed to guard the others.
