That seems like a pretty baseless generalization. My dad fought in Viet Nam and my grandpa fought in World War II and Korea. My dad didn't like to talk about it but my grandpa liked to talk about it a lot. He'd talk endlessly about the ships he was on and the ports they stopped in and the people he met. I never saw combat but I have no problems talking about my time in the service, although I mostly avoid it because usually people find it pretty dull. (It was dull.)

No, it isn't. I have two uncles who were in combat, and they never talked to me about it. Ever. But their wives told me plenty of stories of getting beat up in the middle of the night when their husbands were having nightmares. Your grandpa's anecdotes of visiting ports is not talking about combat.
